Rickets Anyone? By Eliza Larkin
Rickets is a disease when you don't have enough calcium in your body. Mom helped me with a science experiment about calcium.
We used chicken bones because they contain lots of calcium. We snuck these bones out of the cafeteria after we had baked chicken for lunch. This is the before picture.
We put them in a jar, added enough vinegar to cover the bones, and set them on the counter for 4 weeks. (They may have been done in 2 weeks, but we forgot about them.)
This is the bone afterwards. It bends because it has no calcium. You're more likely to break your bones if you don't get enough calcium. I went through our pantry and identified sources of calcium. Here are some examples; chicken breast 2%, sour cream 20%, cheese 20%, green beans 2%, Bisquick 20%, tomato soup 0%, refried beans 2%, evaporated milk 8%, orange juice 2% and milk was the best with 30%.
