Awards assembly

Elizabeth recieved the Honor's reader award at Franklin Elementary school on 28 May 2009. This is an award that usually only the fifth and sixth graders try for. Liz is a second grader that reads at a 5.7 grade level and her teacher encouraged her to try for this award. There were 5 other students that got this award besides Liz and 3 that received the High Honor's award. They didn't want to give a second grader the award, but after all the work she did, Dave and I made sure that she got the award. The principal says that problems "will be cleared up next year with a success option for students of all grades." That tells me that she won't be able to get this award next year, but there will be something she can earn. She'll try again for the Honor's reader in fifth grade, which is fine. She was at a disadvantage (over the fifth graders) from the beginning because she had to complete the AR requirements for 3rd grade, 4th grade and 5th grade to even start for the Honor's. She did so much, if the school didn't give her the plaque, we were going to get her one. The principal gave her a certificate in her class the day before, but Dave and I didn't think this was fair and they ended up giving her the plaque in front of the whole school. It was a special moment for her. She also got a perfect attendance award. This is Mrs. Maria Araujo, Elizabeth's second grade teacher. She encouraged Eliza to keep reading and made sure that I was on top of things to see that Elizabeth completed all of the requirements she needed. On the last day of school, Mrs. Araujo said that she'll probably miss Eliza the most because Eliza was like a teacher's aide to her - always encouraging the other students and helping the teacher with whatever she needed.
